Ed Sheeran Gets His First Billboard #1 Hit with ‘Shape of You’

Ed Sheeran Gets His First Billboard #1 Song with ‘Shape of You’

The singers speedy trajectory easily predicted this. Sheeran is one of the biggest artists on the planet right now with “Shape of You” debuting at #1 and his other new tune, “Castle on the Hill” at #6. That makes Sheeran the only artist in Billboards 58-year history to have two songs launch in the top 10 simultaneously.

He did come very close before with “Thinking Out Loud” which peaked at #2.

In its weeks “Shape of You” had 241,000 downloads while “Castle on the Hill” earned 171,000.

His third album “÷” (Divide) will be released on March 3 of this year. It’s follows his debut “+” (Plus) and “x” (Multiply). Sheeran told Zane Lowe on his Apple Beats radio show that “÷” was going to be released last November but he held the project because of the Blank – storm caused by the election. That wasn’t the only reason however the singer said, “And then the week after Bruno [Mars] came out, the week after The Weeknd came out and I was like…”

At least he’s honest about how he looks at competition saying, “It feels like a clean start this year not like any time I’ve come out there’s always been another person,” He’s talking mostly of Adele – He was in her shadow for awards for a stint adding, “This year it kinda feels like there’s no one there … I’m very, very confident in this year. This year is mine!” – by John Beaudin
